À Table 01 — Emil Krøyer designer and co-founder of Krøyer-Sætter-Lassen

Emil Krøyer — designer and friend of ours — works across furniture, product, and interior design. Based in Copenhagen, he is one half of the design duo Krøyer-Sætter-Lassen. We met him at his vibrant studio in outer Nordhavn and at his local neighbourhood café in Nørrebro.

Which dish tastes most like home to you?

The easy answer would be my mother’s pasta bolognese, but the honest one is a quirky dish she invented herself — basically pasta, vegetables and tuna baked in the oven.

What’s your go-to dish to serve to loved ones?

I love foraging mushrooms, so a simple mushroom risotto has become a bit of a classic in our home.

What’s your best table or porcelain related memory from childhood?

I’ve inherited a water carafe from my parents that’s shaped like a rooster — colorful and a little eccentric. It’s been in our family ever since my grandmother was sent to Italy as a young woman.

Last summer, when an Italian friend visited, she told me it came from a very specific region and was only produced there. I already loved it, but that story somehow added another layer.

Do you have a tableware journey?

When my grandmother passed away, I inherited a full set of "Mågestellet" from Royal Copenhagen. It used to come out only for guests and holidays. On one hand, I think she would be shocked to see how casually it’s being used now — but on the other hand, I believe she’d be happy to see how it has become this subtle, ever-present backdrop for a family life that plays out in many different ways.

What makes a good host or a good guest?

I love visiting my friend Lærke. It’s rarely planned — often spontaneous — but there’s always space, always a little extra energy when I drop by. There’s always a good cup of coffee or something delicious to eat — relaxed, never pretentious. Where is your favourite place to take your coffee?

Gavlen is my nearby café and bar — easy choice.

Which cup are you — small, large, with or without handle?

Coffee cups are made with handles in my world. I’m a medium person, so my answer is: medium, with a handle. It doesn’t sound that sexy — haha!

Thank you Emil for opening your studio and sharing your morning with us!

Until next time.
